Joris Ivens and the documentary "The 400 Million"

Joris Ivens (18 November 1898 – 28 June 1989) was a Dutch documentary filmmaker. Similar to Robert Capa, Ivens worked on documenting the Spanish Civil War before coming to China to document the Anti-Japanese War. Ivens directed The 400 Million, alternatingly titled China in 1938, while based in Hankou. (Robert Capa did camera work for the film). The film traces Chinese history and celebrated the Chinese as united against Japanese invaders. The film was released in 1939. The film was censored by the Nationalist Party because the Nationalists felt it gave too much credit to left-wing fighting forces.
